Samsung Removes LockStar’s Custom Notifications Feature in One UI 7

Within Samsung’s Good Lock modules, LockStar is a popular addition to Galaxy devices. While the app has historically allowed users to change how notifications appear on the lock screen, LockStar loses that ability in One UI 7. This isn’t a matter of broken functionality; Samsung apparently just doesn’t want to support it.

Out of the box, Samsung Galaxy phones offer a good amount of customization for the lock screen, like clock styles, lock screen widgets, and element placement. For users that want something a littler more robust, Samsung suggests downloading LockStar. It comes as a part of Samsung’s Good Lock app suite through the Galaxy Store. In essence, those modules allow users to take more control over their lock screen.

A big part of LockStar customization was custom notifications. Users could change the color and size of incoming alerts so they fit a specific style, which was a nice option to have. It looks like when users upgrade to One UI 7, LockStar’s ability to customize notifications is lost (via SammyFans). Reports indicate that even though notifications can still be manipulated in-app, changes don’t take effect.

According to Samsung, this isn’t a bug. Rather, the company has decided to drop custom notifications in One UI 7 with LockStar, even though the app will remain available via Good Lock. In terms of the app’s capabilities in One UI 7, Samsung said this:

    • Customizing notification items is no longer supported in One Ui 7.0 LockStar. However, we will continue to monitor customer responses and consider supporting it in the future, so please keep this in mind.

The response indicates that Samsung has no intention of keeping that feature around, which could suggest that Samsung is working on bringing custom notifications to vanilla One UI 7. It could also mean that Samsung simply no longer wants to support the feature. LockStar still works in One UI 7, and it has plenty of other updated features.
