Google is expected to release the Pixel 9a later this week, but the leaks haven’t stopped as the device has now received the customary YouTube unboxing which has also seemingly confirmed that the modem inside isn’t on par with the rest of the Pixel 9 series.
Image:GoogleYouTuber Sahil Karoul obtained an early Pixel 9a unit in Dubai – the “Iris” purple variant no less – which they then fully unboxed.
As expected, Google is using the same packaging style for the Pixel 9a as the rest of the Pixel 9 series, without a ton in the box. There’s a SIM tool, a USB-C cable, and some documentation. The video also clearly shows off the matte finish of the “Iris” color variant, both on the back of the device and on the side rails too.
The video notes that the Pixel 9a is using a Tensor G4 with 8GB of RAM, and also shows that rumors of a lesser modem were likely true. The baseband version shown in the video starts with “g5300,” all but confirming the use of an Exynos 5300 modem. Other Pixel 9 series devices use “g5400” in their baseband version, in reference to the newer Exynos 5400 modem usually in place with Tensor G4. This means that modem performance will be more in line with the Pixel 8 series than the Pixel 9.
The video goes on to reveal some benchmark scores in AnTuTu, GeekBench, and others, while also showing decent performance in PUBG Mobile and then going on to show camera samples. The video is in Hindi, but another “review” from The Mobile Central (via Android Police) also offers a look at the Pixel 9a in English.
Google is reportedly set to reveal the Pixel 9a later this week, with previous rumors indicating a March 19 unveiling.
