Xbox Cloud Gaming Adds Shareable Invite Links for Easier Multiplayer

A common way for users to invite each other to play games is through the platform they’re playing on. Now, Xbox is allowing players to invite each other using a shareable link, which anyone can click on and open.

Cloud-based game streaming sort of sits in a different mold than traditional gaming. It’s easier to hop into a session, and the required hardware is far less constrained. This means more users can take advantage of cloud gaming, no matter what they intend to play on. As Xbox Cloud Gaming is available on Android, PC, and even TVs, there’s little to limit players — barring any internet connection issues.

In a likely attempt to broaden Xbox Cloud Gaming’s reach, Microsoft is now allowing players to send links to invite others. The link will be provided when the user looks for sharing options via the game invite menu. It can then be sent via the Xbox app or through any other messaging or social app. As long as the other player is using a supported device, they will be able to join.

The catch is that the other player will need to have some sort of “entitlement,” as Xbox is calling it. This is a tie to the game in some capacity. The user will need to either own the game, have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, or be eligible for a free demo of the game in some way to use the invite link. Without that entitlement, the other user will not be able to join. The user will also need to have an Xbox account, in general.

For users who wish to play on their TV, the invited player needs to open the link on their phone and ask for a code to use. Entering that code will grant access. The feature will also allow for access moderation, giving the option to revoke access if necessary.
