Comstruct Raises $13M to Revolutionize Construction Procurement with Software

Munich-based startup Comstruct secures $13 million in Series A funding to digitize and streamline the procurement of construction materials, tackling inefficiencies and promoting sustainability in the industry.

In the world of construction, the term "platform" usually evokes images of concrete structures and scaffolding. But Comstruct, a Munich-based startup, is building a different kind of platform – one that exists in the digital realm. This innovative company has developed a software solution aimed at revolutionizing the procurement process for construction materials.

Large-scale construction projects often grapple with cumbersome procurement procedures. Many suppliers still rely on paper-based systems, with orders placed over the phone and invoices sent via mail. This leads to significant delays, reconciliation challenges, and difficulties in generating comprehensive data reports.

Comstruct has recognized these pain points and developed a platform to address them. The company recently announced a €12.5 million ($13 million) Series A funding round led by GV and 20VC, with participation from existing investors Booom and Puzzle Ventures.

Streamlining Procurement with a Unified Platform

"The current procurement process for construction materials is very analog," explains Henric Meinhardt, co-founder and CEO of Comstruct. "Orders are often placed with a phone call, followed by physical delivery notes and manual data entry into spreadsheets. This process is time-consuming and prone to errors."

While some suppliers have attempted to digitize by creating their own apps, this creates a new problem for contractors who are forced to navigate a multitude of different platforms. Comstruct offers a unified solution that integrates with various suppliers, streamlining the entire process

How Comstruct Works

Comstruct's platform connects with general contractors and their network of suppliers, accommodating the diverse needs and locations of construction sites. The company integrates with suppliers' existing systems, whether it's through EDI interfaces, email forwarding, or web scraping of customer portals.

"We work closely with suppliers to understand their data sharing capabilities and then structure that information accordingly," says Meinhardt.

The platform leverages machine learning to facilitate the integration of new suppliers. This has enabled Comstruct to onboard an impressive 800 material suppliers in just two years.

Key Features and Benefits

Comstruct's platform offers four core modules:

  • Ordering: Streamlined digital ordering of materials.
  • Digital Delivery Receipts: Eliminates paper-based delivery notes and ensures real-time tracking.
  • Invoice Reconciliation: Automates invoice matching and reconciliation, reducing errors and saving time.
  • ESG Reporting: Provides comprehensive data on material usage for sustainability reporting and compliance.

The company operates on a usage-based pricing model, charging a simple per-document fee.

Addressing Sustainability Concerns

With increasing emphasis on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, Comstruct's platform offers a valuable tool for contractors to track and report on their material usage. This is particularly important in light of regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in Europe, which mandates detailed reporting on resource consumption.

"Until now, many contractors didn't have precise data on their material usage," notes Meinhardt. "Our platform provides them with the necessary information to meet regulatory requirements and improve their sustainability performance."

Competitive Landscape

Comstruct faces competition from other players in the construction technology space, such as Kojo in the U.S. and Qflow in the U.K. However, each company has a distinct focus. Kojo primarily concentrates on the procurement aspect, while Qflow specializes in waste management. Comstruct differentiates itself by offering a comprehensive platform that covers the entire procurement process, from ordering to ESG reporting.

Expansion Plans

Comstruct initially focused on the Swiss market, where Meinhardt studied, and has achieved significant penetration, with 70-80% of requested suppliers already integrated into the platform. The company is now actively expanding into Germany, Austria, and other European countries.

Success Stories

Comstruct's platform has already been deployed in several large-scale construction projects, including tunnel projects, a highway project in Stockholm, and a major train project in Munich. Notably, the Gotthard Tunnel project in Switzerland utilizes Comstruct to manage all delivery notes and link them to invoices.

Comstruct's innovative platform is poised to transform the construction industry by digitizing and streamlining the procurement process. By eliminating manual tasks, reducing errors, and providing valuable data insights, Comstruct empowers construction firms to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability. With its strong financial backing and growing customer base, Comstruct is well-positioned to become a leader in the construction technology space.
