Xbox Expands External Storage Support to Massive 24TB Drives

Good News for Gamers: Xbox Series X|S consoles are getting a significant boost in external storage capabilities. A new beta update for Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring allows users to leverage much larger external hard drives, specifically up to 24TB.

Breaking the 16TB Barrier:
Previously, Xbox consoles were limited to a maximum of 16TB of external storage. This update introduces the ability to partition larger drives, effectively bypassing this limitation. Now, gamers can utilize the full capacity of a 24TB drive by creating multiple 16TB partitions.

Important Note: Existing users with drives exceeding 16TB will need to reformat their drives to take advantage of this enhanced support.

Benefits of Increased Storage:

  • Enhanced Game Archiving: Store a vast library of games, apps, and media files on a single external drive.
  • Reduced Redownload Times: Back up game installations to avoid lengthy redownloads, especially for large titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (over 300GB).
  • Streamlined Game Management: Easily switch between games without the need for constant re-downloads.

Improved Cloud Gaming Experience:

Alongside the storage expansion, Xbox is introducing new network quality indicators for cloud gaming sessions. These indicators, displayed as red bubbles on the screen, provide real-time feedback on connection issues such as packet loss and increased ping. This information empowers gamers to troubleshoot connectivity problems and optimize their cloud gaming experience.

Looking Ahead:

While direct game play from external drives is still not supported for current-generation games, this update significantly enhances the overall gaming experience by providing ample storage space for game libraries and improving cloud gaming stability.
