CES 2025 left me feeling more optimistic about the future of tech than ever before. While AI dominated the conversation, there were a surprising number of exciting gadgets on display. From innovative displays to powerful gaming tablets, it was a refreshing change from the AI-centric focus of previous years.
One of the most significant announcements, however, wasn't about hardware itself. Both Samsung and Google confirmed their support for Qi2, the latest wireless charging standard. This is a major step forward, especially considering the limited MagSafe support on 2024 Android flagships.
Qi2 vs. MagSafe: A Case for Integration
While Qi2 promises faster and more efficient charging, the question remains: how will Android manufacturers implement it?
Samsung is rumored to support Qi2 and MagSafe accessories through optional cases for the Galaxy S25. OnePlus has taken a similar approach, offering a 50W MagSafe-compatible charger but requiring a separate case for magnetic functionality.
This approach has its drawbacks. Most users keep cases on their phones, but not everyone will purchase a specific case for MagSafe compatibility. This limits the accessibility and usefulness of the feature.
A Better Approach: Built-in MagSafe
Ideally, Android manufacturers should integrate MagSafe directly into their phones, similar to Apple. This ensures all users can benefit from the technology without needing additional accessories.
I hope Google takes this approach with the Pixel 10. Building magnets into the phone's chassis and including compatible cases in the box would provide a seamless and user-friendly experience.
The Future of Wireless Charging
Qi2's arrival on Android opens up exciting possibilities. With improved charging speeds and the potential for expanded accessory ecosystems, the future of wireless charging looks brighter than ever.
