Instagram is making a significant change to its platform: profile grids will now display content as rectangles instead of the iconic squares. This shift, which has been in testing, is officially rolling out this weekend.
"I know some of you really like your squares," acknowledged Instagram chief Adam Mosseri in an Instagram Story on Friday. "And square photos are sort of the heritage of Instagram. But at this point, most of what’s uploaded, both photos and videos, are vertical in their orientation."
Mosseri explained that the current system often leads to excessive cropping of images and videos, which diminishes the original content. "It’s a bummer to overly crop them," he added.
While recognizing that this change might initially cause some discomfort, Mosseri believes it will ultimately be beneficial for users. "I think people will, over the long run, be excited that more of their photos and more of their videos are actually visible as intended in the profile as opposed to aggressively cropped," he stated.
This rationale echoes Mosseri's comments from August when Instagram first confirmed its plans to test the rectangular format.
Beyond the Grid: New Features
In addition to the profile grid change, Instagram announced a new feature for the Reels feed. Users can now easily discover videos that their friends have liked within a dedicated section.
A New Era for Instagram
This move marks a significant departure from Instagram's roots as a platform primarily focused on square images. As user behavior evolves and content creation shifts towards vertical formats (like Reels and Stories), Instagram is adapting to ensure a more seamless and enjoyable experience for its users.
