Google Nest Cams Finally Find a Home in the Google Home App

In a move towards a unified smart home experience, Google announced a public preview program allowing users to manage their Nest Cam IQ (indoor and outdoor) cameras within the Google Home app. This signifies a significant step in Google's ongoing migration away from the dedicated Nest app.

What This Means for Nest Cam IQ Owners

Previously, Nest Cam IQ cameras required the separate Nest app for management. Now, with the public preview, users can control these cameras directly through the familiar Google Home app. This eliminates the need to switch between apps, streamlining smart home management.

Key Benefits of Managing Nest Cam IQs in Google Home

Centralized Control: View live streams, access video history (both event and timeline views), and adjust camera settings – all within the Google Home app.

Simplified Management: No more app-hopping! Manage all your Nest cameras (from 2015 onwards) in one central location.

Favorites Tab Integration: Easily access live streams from your favorite cameras directly within the Google Home app's Favorites tab.

Automation Potential: Set up automations for your Nest Cam IQs using the functionalities offered within the Google Home app.

Joining the Public Preview and Transferring Cameras

Joining the public preview is easy. You can do so either directly within the Google Home app or by visiting home.google.com. Google highlights that users already enrolled in the Public Preview program will receive prompts within both the Nest app and the Google Home app under the Favorites tab. These prompts will guide them through the transfer process for their Nest Cam IQ cameras.

Reverting the Transfer (if Needed)

Google assures users that if they decide to switch back, they can easily transfer their Nest Cam IQ cameras back to the Nest app. This provides flexibility for those who might prefer the functionalities offered by the dedicated Nest app for the time being.

Nest Hub Max Integration (Public Preview Only)

Similar to Nest Cam IQ cameras, the Google Home app now allows management of Nest Hub Max devices – but only for those enrolled in the Public Preview program. Important Note: Unlike Nest Cam IQs, Nest Hub Max devices transferred to the Google Home app cannot be transferred back to the Nest app at this time.

Current Nest App Functionality and Future Support

Google emphasizes its continued support for the Nest app. There are no immediate changes to the Nest app experience. Currently, the Nest app remains the only platform for managing Nest Protect smoke detectors and Nest x Yale door locks.

The Future of Nest App and Google Home App Integration

This move signifies Google's continued efforts to consolidate its smart home offerings under the Google Home app umbrella. With Nest Cam IQs now joining the fold, the Nest app's functionality becomes increasingly focused on Nest Protect and Nest x Yale door locks. We can expect future updates to further bridge the gap between the two apps, potentially leading to a more unified smart home management experience in the long run.

Optimizing Your Smart Home with Google Nest

By leveraging the Google Home app's functionalities, you can create a more streamlined and centralized smart home ecosystem. The public preview for Nest Cam IQ management offers a glimpse into the future of Google's smart home vision, where all compatible devices can be managed seamlessly within a single app.

So, if you've been longing for a more unified Nest experience, consider joining the Google Home app Public Preview program and take control of your Nest Cam IQs from the comfort of your familiar Google Home app!
