YouTube's Premium Lite: A Cheaper, Ad-Limited Subscription

  

YouTube is once again testing a more affordable version of its premium subscription service, Premium Lite. This time, however, the service comes with a caveat: limited ads.


The company confirmed the tests to Android Authority and The Verge, stating that they have been experimenting with a "different version" of the subscription with "some users in Australia, Germany, and Thailand for several months."

According to screenshots shared by singer-songwriter Jonah Manzano, Premium Lite in Australia is priced at $8.99 AUD per month on the web, significantly lower than the $16.99 AUD cost for the full version of Premium. On iOS, the costs are $11.99 AUD for Premium Lite and $22.99 AUD for Premium.

Key differences between the new Premium Lite and the full Premium subscription include:

  • Limited ads: While the previous version of Premium Lite offered a completely ad-free experience, the new version allows for limited ads on music content, Shorts, and during search and browsing.
  • No ad-free YouTube Music: Premium Lite does not provide ad-free access to YouTube Music, a feature available with the full Premium subscription.
  • No offline downloads or background playback: Users cannot download videos for offline playback or listen to videos in the background with Premium Lite.

YouTube's decision to reintroduce Premium Lite with limited ads is likely a strategic move to attract a wider audience and increase revenue. By offering a more affordable option, YouTube can appeal to users who may not be willing to pay the full price for a completely ad-free experience.
